Tenerife Museums

Many of the best museums in Tenerife have become popular tourist attractions in their own right, often celebrating the island's history, with a number of important artefacts and relics being housed in the Tenerife Anthropology Museum.
The Regional Military Museum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, known locally as the Museo Militar de Almeyda, contains an extensive weaponry collection, while Tenerife's Natural and Human History Museum (Museo de la Naturaleza y El Hombre) is known for its important archaeological treasures. Situated in the historic Almeida Castle (Castillo de Almeida), in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife area, the Regional Military Museum contains an extensive selection of historic maps of the Canary Islands. Other museum highlights include a number of important documents, a large military and weaponry collection, an exhibition celebrating the life of famous sailor Admiral Nelson, colourful flags and a selection of old oil paintings by local Canarian artists.

Tenerife's Natural and Human History Museum in also known locally as the Museum of Man and Nature and is one of the island's most important museums. Containing many important collections of archaeological treasures and historic artefacts from around Tenerife, the museum was founded to become a central point for this important cultural information, much of which was gathered from small museums. The Natural and Human History Museum also features information and recreations about the life and tribulations of pre-Hispanic man.

For those who enjoy wine tasting, be sure to visit La Baranda Wine Museum, where a number of Spanish wines are available for both tasting and purchase. Located in the Puerto de la Cruz area of Tenerife, La Baranda Wine Museum actively promotes the island's popular wines and also features a large exhibition room with historical wine information and artefacts, together with a restaurant and outdoor patio area.

The Tenerife Anthropology Museum celebrates the rich history and heritage of the Canary Islands and is housed in a particularly grand 18th-century residence. Many cultural workshops and special events take place at the museum around the year.

Tenerife's Ceramics Museum can be found in the town of La Orotava contains the most extensive collection of pottery in the whole of Spain. With clear displays and information in a number of different languages, the Ceramics Museum is known locally as the Museo de Cerámica.
